How do I get involved
Monday, 21 April 2008
The Australian Services Union welcomes the involvement of members - it's your organisation, after all! Most of the staff of the union commenced their union careers as activists in their workplaces.
Our strength as a union is in our diversity. Our members work in many different occupations and have many different views. But we all share the same goal: to achieve and maintain better working conditions and to be treated fairly and with respect.
The first step to getting involved with ASU Queensland Services Branch is - of course - to become a member.
Apart from gaining assistance at work, joining the ASU gives you access to many valuable benefits that aren't available to non-members. You can find out all about these on our Membership pages, along with our application form and current rates.
If you're interested in becoming even more involved in the ASU, we run regular training courses covering a wide variety of topics. These training courses are designed to help you to become a better shop-floor delegate at your workplace.
We believe that knowledge is power and that a well-trained membership is also an effective, professional one. The Australian Services Union Queensland Services Branch has won wide respect for our commitment to ensuring that all our officials - in whatever capacity they represent the union - are very well-versed in all aspects of their work.
ASU training courses are advertised on our web site. If you join our email mailing list you can also receive notices about new courses via email.
The Australian Services Union is a democratic organisation at every level. So the next step after you've joined up and been trained is to get elected by your fellow workmates as their delegate.
Sometimes (it happens!) you may get elected before you've been properly trained. In this case, the ASU will help you become an efficient, professional workplace delegate as quickly as possible.
Finally - once you've experienced the delegate role - you may decide that you'd like to represent your industry on an Industry Committee, Branch Executive or Branch Council. The Australian Services Union Queensland Services Branch also has many regional committees which meet to consider issues specific to your workplace or region.
Membership of any of these committees can be enormously rewarding. They not only help you obtain a broader view of your industry and to see individual workplace issues in context, but also allow you to have direct input into the solution of much bigger problems that may affect your industry regionally or state-wide (sometimes even nation-wide).
Committee members also receive the deeply personal reward of seeing the positive outcomes of their work directly benefit large numbers of people: their workmates, friends, industry colleagues and sometimes even the fabric of Australian society itself.
In fact, many of the key attributes of Australia that we accept today as part of our national character - such as fair pay, reasonable working hours, safe working conditions, equity and equality - have come directly out of the work of committed union members working in precisely this way over the last 150 years.
Your organiser or the Branch Secretary can provide you with more details about any of these options. For a listing of current Industry Committee, Branch Executive and Branch Council members, click here .
