It's been an amazing few weeks in Australian politics. From a new Prime Minister, and the first woman Prime Minister, to Australians heading to the polls on August 21.
And it's absolutely important you are enrolled to vote. If you're a first time voter, you have to have your forms into the AEC by 8pm (local time) on Monday 19 July, today! When the Your Rights at Work campaign kicked off we vowed to keep the campaign going to restore fair and balanced workplaces. Since the 2007 election, with your help, we've made some important steps forward on restoring fair and balanced workplaces. From improved rights at work, to increased superannuation and paid parental leave scheme, which starts next year, these have been significant milestones. However we also know there is much more to be done. But we can't go backwards now to the Liberals' latest version of WorkChoices, whatever they call it. In this newsletter we cover:
- The final drive to make sure all eligible Australians are enrolled to vote properly before the rolls close;
- Our priorities for a better deal for Australian workers and their families; and
- The latest news about the campaign, how you can help and what's coming up.
| " Any forms submitted electronically (by fax or email) must be received by the AEC by 8pm local time in the state/territory you are enrolling to vote in. " |

Our Priorities: Working for a Better Life
Unions want a better deal for Australian workers and their families. It's important that we have an Australia with a fair go for all; rights at work for all workers; a time for family and friends and decent jobs with decent incomes and a secure retirement. We don't think these things are too much to ask for. We've seen among other things, the end of WorkChoices; an increase in minimum wage by $26: and Australia's first ever universal paid parental leave scheme, which is set to start next year. This election will be important because we must continue to move forward with workers' rights and to restore fair and balanced workplaces.It's fair to say that we've made some pretty good achievements in the last 3 years, but there is still much to do. It's important to know what we'll be fighting for into the future. [Continue reading...]
'WorkChoices. Whatever the name, never again' Update
The team in the Dickson electorate in Queensland spent a day out and some how the local Member of Parliament set up near them. However, we did enjoy the efforts of a local resident who showed up with a ute and a sign with a clear message "Dutton Dumped Dickson". We think it says it all. In New South Wales, the team in Robertson headed to the Gosford train station. They spent a few hours handing out leaflets to commuters and finding out their opinions about WorkChoices. While they were there they grabbed some vox pops.
A big thank you to the Rail Train & Bus Union (RTBU) for their support.
There's also some activity in the electorate of Lindsay. The new ACTU President, Ged Kearney, recently spent time through western Sydney. She spoke with workers from a range of industries about their issues and our campaign. Check out all the pictures and videos we have so far.
